The power of storytelling

Andrea, Content Manager at Kids Matter, talks about the power of story in shaping identity and connection.

Long (long!) ago – in the “olden days”, as my children like to say (meaning the nineties) – families and communities would gather around fires to tell stories. To pass the time, yes, but also to pass down values and beliefs. To create a sense of belonging. These days, we often share good stories over dinner, at family gatherings, or through the books we read and the films or shows we watch together.

Storytelling has changed over time, but it’s always been a core part of culture. Stories help us make sense of the world, give us a safe space to explore our feelings and ultimately help shape who we are. What a beautiful gift for parents to pass on to their children.

There is something so special about a child snuggled on a lap, listening to “that time when we…” – a small moment, but one that can build trust, laughter and love.

In session 3 of our parenting programme, we explore storytelling as a way for mums, dads and carers to connect with their children and spend meaningful time together. But it’s not just something we suggest – it’s something we live out in our own team culture, too. Whether it’s celebrating a breakthrough with a parent, a new partnership or a fundraising milestone, we make space to share those stories and reflect on why they matter.

These real-life stories remind us that that we are part of a great big awesome vision to see every child in need raised in a strong family, and little by little this vision is taking root all around us – and we love it!
