In 2021, the average monthly donation in the UK in 2021 was £49 but data released in January 2023 by debt charity StepChange shows that 60 per cent of people have cut back on donations in the past six months.

We’re in the midst of a cost of living crisis and giving away money might seem counterintuitive to making sure we’re spending within our means and living responsibly. The thing is, charities fill a gap that public services cannot (because of budget cuts) and if they lose funding, society will foot the bill:

  • If charities don’t receive funding, the ‘cost’ won’t go away, it will simply transfer to an already badly overstretched public sector.
  • Charities are better situated to reach the most vulnerable and excluded.
  • Support offered by charities is better targeted to specific needs, as opposed to blanket welfare funding provided by government.
  • With only one million staff and an estimated 13 million unpaid volunteers, charity support is cheaper than the public sector.
  • If charities can’t provide support for those overlooked by the systems in our society, the impact will be felt for years.

Donating what you can to charities that positively impact our communities really does help!

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing more about how to and why give to Kids Matter, and how we spend your money, so do look out for that. For now, could you join us as a Family Champion and help make a difference.
